Wedding in Portugal

Wedding in Portugal // Deborah & Toby

I first met Deborah & Toby at their friends Nina & Tim’s wedding at Shoreditch House back in 2012, and so I was really happy to hear from them when they got in touch earlier this year and asked me to photograph their wedding in Portugal. The 3 day weekend kicked off on the Friday night with drinks at Chapito, a circus school overlooking the city, and ended with a chilled brunch on the Sunday. The wedding itself took place on Saturday a little way outside of Lisbon at Quinta de D. Carlos, a family owned wine estate set in acres of gardens and with a pretty courtyard perfect for an al fresco wedding. Guests arrived from Lisbon by bus, and there were cocktails on the lawn before the early evening ceremony in the estate’s tiny chapel. Music was a huge part of Deborah & Toby’s wedding in Portugal and they had a lot of special guests performing over the course of the day. Ed Harcourt played piano and sang in the chapel, which was hauntingly beautiful and a privilege to hear in such a tiny space. He sang “This One’s For You”, a song from an album he released his 2004, the year Toby and Deborah met. Dinner was served on long tables in the courtyard, which looked lovely lit up with strings of fairy lights, and around midnight there were speeches, cake and sparklers. DJ sets got the crowd warmed up before an impressive ‘supergroup’ formed of Ed Harcourt, Blaenavon and one fifth of Foals took to the stage. An impressive lineup, and once Deborah & Toby got up there to sing with them, even more impressive. A wild night was had by all, with amazing music and a real celebratory atmosphere that carried on til the early hours.
